Where to stay
Pick the Yosemite base before you pick the itinerary.
The lodging choice decides your first hour every morning. Stay close for Valley access, farther out for price and restaurants, or on the right entrance road for the second big day you actually want.
Inside the park
Best for early Valley mornings, hardest to book, and often expensive. If a good room appears for your dates, the location can be worth simplifying the rest of the trip.
El Portal
The practical west-side choice when Valley access matters more than town atmosphere. Good for minimizing the morning drive without chasing scarce in-park rooms.
Yosemite West
Cabins and condos can work well for families and groups, especially when Glacier Point Road is part of the plan.
Mariposa
More restaurants, better value, and a real gateway-town feel, with a longer morning push into the Valley.
Oakhurst / Highway 41
Good for Mariposa Grove and south-entrance trips. It adds too much morning drive time if every day starts in Yosemite Valley.
Lee Vining / Mammoth
Only fits Yosemite plans when Tioga Road is open and the high country is part of the trip, not as a default Valley base.

The easiest first Yosemite stay
For many first-timers, El Portal or a well-priced inside-park room is the cleanest default: close enough to protect the Valley morning, simple enough for families, and less dependent on late-night mountain driving after dinner.
